June 16 Race
The swim may have been a minute short, but I’m sure it didn’t feel that way in the driving white caps at the inaugural Elmore Triathlon of 2022! State Park buoy lines were in disarray or missing and the Shamu turnaround float drifted in repeatedly. After swimmers completed the modified course, they fought a headwind biking south and sailed back into transition just before the 1st rain showers. Runners finished despite a sudden thunderstorm, but participants departed the site as quickly as possible to stay safe. Congratulations to the (at least) 4 1st time triathletes: Ambiana Glavin, Di Jones, Joanne Garton and Carter Stowell! I may have missed some, let me know! Also, congratulations to Sean McLoughlin who won a close battle just ahead of Thorin Markison, and Lance Parker! They finished 1-2-3 in just 21 seconds, followed several minutes later by our 1st youth finisher Ezra Merrill-Triplet. Ezra beat his best time from 2021 by 3 minutes. Mallory Staskus was the lone female to break the 1 hour mark, finishing ahead of Marian Wolz and Pam Sills. As always, thank you very much to my volunteers: Sigh Searles, Dot Martin and Eric Ryea.
I hope to see everyone again on June 30 on a perfect weather day!
June 30 Race
What a contrast in weather conditions from June 16! It was a beautiful day with calm water, allowing the swim buoys to be placed and remain in their proper positions for a ¼ mile swim. 26 athletes, including at least one 1st time triathlete, and 2 doing their 1st ones in a long time competed. The same men raced for the top 3 spots as last event, but this time Thorin Markison prevailed with Lance Parker and Sean McLoughlin coming in within the next minute. Rima Carlson, multi-time female winner from 2020 and 2021 returned to again place 1st with Kate Barash-Engel and Doreen Audette placing 2nd and 3rd. Woodie Clifton raced the aquabike, as the 1st place (and only) aquabike participant this week.
Thank you very much to volunteers Dot and John Martin, Alan Cass and Sigh Searles!
I hope we get a full house on July 14 for the 2022 Finale and pizza party!
July 14 Race
Fantastic finish to the 2022 season! For the 1st time ever, we actually hit the 40 participant limit on a beautiful evening. Also for the 1st time ever, thanks to Richard Ford, for kicking off the event with an awesome rendition of the National Anthem. Richard is from CT and has a goal of singing the National Anthem at the start of a triathlon in every state.
Perfect conditions led to fast times. 4 women and 8 men broke the 1 hour mark. The same fast men were 1-2-3 as in the June events, but this time Lance Parker came out on top for 1st place OA, giving Sean, Thorin and Lance one win each. Rima Carlson repeated as female champion chased closely by Elsa Chinburg and Kate Barash-Engel. Congratulations to 1st time triathlete Amy Tomasso and to 9 year old Atticus Bailey who did the aquathlon. 4 competitors chose the aquabike, 2 competitors formed a relay team, and 2 raced the aquathlon. There is something for everyone at Elmore!
Everyone raved about the delicious Fire Tower Pizza and enjoyed socializing to cap off the season. Thanks again to my volunteers. I needed extra help due to a full contingent of racers and a picnic for all. Thanks to my usual volunteers: Eric Ryea, Sigh Searles, and John Martin and for extra help from Katrina Antonovich, Dennis Shaffer, Pam Sills, and Doreen Audette. And of course thanks to the State Park for allowing us to use such a beautiful venue for the 16th year!
